What We Can Do For You...

The Role of The Authorising Engineer

An Authorising Engineer’s (AE’s) role is to act as an independent professional advisor for high-risk engineering systems. This is accomplished by offering advice for: the management of SSoW, technical compliance, and individual/team skills and abilities.

We can support you with recommendations for the appointment of your Authorised Persons (APs), who would then manage your systems effectively and in accordance with company SSoW. The overall process and individual AP performance, can then be monitored periodically.

Working with the respective teams, we can aid the development of the organisational structure by carrying out regular audits of the SSoW. We do this by offering recommendations for any improvement and consequently supporting you to a safer, more effective, and compliant workplace.

Authorising Engineer Consultancy

Following the principles of the AE - where no process exists, we can offer you both advice and support in establishing a cost-effective SSoW methodology. For those clients who already have a methodology in place, we can offer assistance in the review of safety documentation, as well as assisting in the auditing and assessment of personnel.

As members of The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), The Institution of Healthcare Engineering and Estates Management (IHEEM), Society of Operations Engineers (SOE), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and other professional accredited bodies, the services we provide can be in accordance with either the MOD Joint Services Publication (JSP) 375 Volume 3 “Management of health and safety in defence: high risk activities on the defence estate”, the suite of Health Technical Memoranda (HTM), or bespoke customer safety rules and procedures.

Electrical Selectivity Studies

Electrical Selectivity Studies (selectivity in accordance with BS7671) are carried out to ensure adequate protection of electrical systems and the safety of service provision. This is to limit disruption to the electrical infrastructure by finely tuning protective devices to activate correctly, minimising business disruption and downtime in the event of fault or overload. Additionally, the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) recommends reviewing selectivity every 5 years or following any significant change to the system.

Following a detailed on-site survey of the installed electrical equipment, you are provided with a written report accompanied with a system line diagram and a grading chart. Additionally, you will receive recommended protection device settings, which will provide an appropriate level of selectivity for fault and overload protection for the HV system characteristics.
